2016: The 25th Year of New Tech Machinery

Next year, during 2016, New Tech Machinery will be celebrating 25 years in the business of making the world’s best portable rollforming equipment.  Started in 1991, New Tech Machinery began with the MACH II gutter machine and then the SSP roof panel machine (no longer produced).  Since then, New Tech Machinery now offers the versatile, best-selling SSQ roof panel machine and three other roof panel machines including the SSH and SSR.  The MACH II gutter machine is the most copied in the industry.

Still located in Denver, Colorado; New Tech Machinery is proud to be growing and creating jobs.  The recent acquisition of New Tech Machinery by Mazzella Companies has just made the New Tech Machinery family larger and the future looks bright for the company.

Project From Our Friends at Sheffield Metals

The Antilles School at Fort Buchanan, Puerto Rico, was recently completed and is undoubtedly a great example of a project that utilized all facets of the Sheffield Metals’ program.  Nearly two years ago JGR Eco-Logical Group was referred by Mark Strait (Sharkskin) to contact Joe LaCrue (Sheffield Metals Western Division) regarding the project.  If awarded the job their intention was to purchase a roof panel machine, a brake and shear, plus all the material required for the standing seam metal roof system.  The project also required a Weathertight Warranty for the roof which Jim Mitchell (Sheffield Metals Technical Director) provided the formal quote for.

Eco-Logical was then provided a quote for a fully loaded New Tech SSQ machine equipped with 2.0” MS and 1.0” Flush Wall tooling, as well as a Cidan brake and shear.  Additionally all coil, sheets, and accessories were quoted for the project.

In Spring 2014 Joe, Mark, and Jim traveled to Puerto Rico to review all technical aspects of the project and ensure that Eco-Logical would be capable of completing the project successfully.  The Sheffield team referred a certified installer who was able to provide further assistance by helping to train Eco-Logical’s installation crews. 

Upon return from the initial trip the process of ordering the machinery and materials began.  Despite many hold ups and delays the project was completed in August 2015 at which time Jim Mitchell and Mike Blake returned to Puerto Rico so that Jim could complete the final inspection and issue the WTW.

2015 Metal Architecture Design Awards, Natural Metals winner, Pearl Izumi North American Headquarters, Arch11, ZPF Architects, Drexel MetalsBiking, triathlon and running gear manufacturer Pearl Izumi’s new corporate headquarters sits on 8 acres at the base of the Rocky Mountains in Louisville, Colo., and is strategically located along the Coal Creek Trail bike and running path. The 55,000-square-foot facility houses its research and design, prototyping and testing, marketing, management and financial functions. Designed by Arch11, Boulder, Colo., along with ZGF Architects LLP, Portland, Ore., and BuroHappold Engineering, Los Angeles, the headquarters is a high-performance design barn that respects the company’s Japanese heritage while celebrating the dramatic seasonal backdrop of the Colorado Rocky Mountain Foothills.

According to E.J. Meade, AIA, architect and principal at Arch11 Inc., the firm was tasked with designing a workspace as cutting edge as Pearl Izumi’s product. “The open plan democratizes their work space, facilitates collaboration between design, testing, management and marketing,” he notes.

 

The headquarters takes its lineage from agriculture barns in form and proposition, says Meade. “It is built like a post-and-beam barn, though in this case the beams and post are steel and infill [structural insulated panels (SIPs)]. But it also performs like a highly sophisticated barn, fostering a healthy, open, flexible space comfortably allowing employees to work at their fullest potential.” 

To exemplify a passion for outdoor sports, the architects used a dynamic and elegantly simple palette of concrete, glass, wood and naturally weathering steel. “We wanted as simple and elemental palette as possible,” Meade says. “The exposed concrete grounds the building, tying it directly to the earth.”

Meade adds that the building’s form is a direct response to the surrounding landscape. The building is intuitively angled to reflect the sharp lines of the Flatirons, protect inhabitants from the elements and offer unobstructed views. “It seeks to rebuild the top of the hill on which it is sited, of the land rather than on it,” he explains. “All workspaces are daylighted and you get views to the landscape from every work place in the building.”

The 2015 Metal Architecture Design Award judges called the headquarters captivating, noting the project’s natural metal is the star of the show. Citing its beautifully executed form, the judges said that while the roof and walls work nicely together, it is the metal and the color of the metal that allows the building to blend perfectly into its surroundings.

Weathering steel is used extensively as the building’s wall and roof material, and was selected as the primary exterior building material for its ability to gracefully weather naturally over time, taking on the patina of the landscape. It offers the appearance of being there for a long time, shaped by the wind, sun and snow. “We wanted a monolithic, sculptural form of a single material. The weathering steel, in addition to being a reference to the history of agricultural and mining structures in the area, gave us an organic, monolithic texture,” explains Meade. 

For the project, Drexel Metals, Louisville, Ky., supplied approximately 135,000 pounds of 22 gauge, A606-Type 4 steel consisting of 85,000 square feet of coil and 22,000 square feet of flat sheets. Nearly 69,000 feet of the metal was mechanically seamed using electric seaming tools from D.I. Roof Seamers, Corinth, Miss., while Premium Panels, Arvada, Colo., site-formed approximately 43,000 square feet of roofing and 17,000 square feet of siding into 2-inch-high by 18-inch-wide, 180-degree mechanically seamed, standing seam panels using Denver-based New Tech Machinery‘s SSQ Roll Formers. 

The metal installer, B&M Roofing of Colorado, Frederick, Colo., also installed 22,000 feet of shop-fabricated flashing and sheet metal trim components as part of the metal roof and siding systems.

“Like traditional Japanese architecture, the materials are left unadorned,” Meade says. “The barn interior is exposed steel and SIP or OSB. There is also an interior court landscaped as a meditative space that recalls the raked gravel gardens of Kyoto.”

After 10 years of outstanding service with New Tech Machinery- Mexico, Don Benjamin Gracia retired on July 10, 2015.  In Mexico, persons who are 65 years of age or older are able to apply for pension and subsequently retire.

Don Benjamin has been a Deburr Operator since he started with New Tech Machinery- Mexico in April of 2005.

For his decade-long contribution to New Tech Machinery, he was presented with an elegant silver plaque.  Its translation reads: “Acknowledging his support during this time and wishing him well today and always.”

New Tech Machinery appreciates the effort and time given by Don Benjamin and we are grateful to have such hard-working and studious employees.  We wish him rest, relaxation and joyful times in his new-found retirement!

  New Tech Machinery Prepares to Run for Military Event!

Saturday June 27th, three New Tech Machinery staffers (Director of Engineering, John DeBerard; National Sales Manager, Tom Laird and Marketing Manager, Kristin Peregoy) will be participating in “Miles for the Military” a 5K charity event to benefit the Seakr foundation which supports families who have had members in the military who have been injured or killed in active duty.  John DeBerard is a Captain in the Navy Reserve.

The 5K will take place in Littleton, Colorado at  Clement Park at 8am.

Picking the right gutter configuration for you:

Most K-style gutter machines come in a variety of configurations including: 5”, 6” or 5/6” combination configurations.  For those new to the industry, this means that the finished gutter has a width of either 5” or 6” at the bottom.  In the world of gutter contracting that inch can make a big difference.

First, dedicated gutter machines that produce either 5” or 6” gutter are only able to produce those sizes.  These machines are best for the contractor who knows what is needed in his or her market and sees no variation.

To determine which gutter machine may be right for you, consider these factors:  Both 5” and 6” machines can be used in residential areas, however the best choice will depend on rainfall amounts.  5” gutter are typically used in drier climates like Colorado.  6” gutter will be used in areas that see a lot of rain, such as Florida.  Homes with a large square footage of roofing may also need 6” gutter to keep up with the needs of a big area.  6” gutter can also be used in light commercial applications. However, 7” box gutter may be the best option for commercial projects and New Tech Machinery also manufactures the BG7 7” Box Gutter Machine.   

For contractors who want to offer a variety of gutter sizes, or may not know what they need the best option is a 5/6” combo configuration.  While this option is slightly more costly the contractor has the option to do a variety of work as 5/6” combo machines can be easily changed over from 5” to 6” or vice versa, often times in the field.  The New Tech Machine MACH II 5/6” combo configuration gutter machine tooling changeover can be completed by one person, minimal tools and often done in 15 minutes or less.  New Tech Machinery also offers a quick YouTube video showing how easy it is to complete a tooling changeover.

The Crispy Critter

Usually fire damage to a machine is devastating enough for said equipment to never function again, but one particular New Tech Machinery gutter machine offers a surprising twist.

The MACH II 5/6” combo configuration K-style gutter machine was shipped to its original owner in May 2009 and recently, the owners at GM Seamless Gutter located in Denver, Colorado bought it used and fire-damaged at an auction.  They brought the machine to New Tech Machinery as it was not functional. While the cause of the fire isn’t known, NTM gutter technicians estimate it may have been a faulty generator with a fuel leak.

Experienced Gutter Technician Chuck Burch of NTM assessed the damage and told GM Seamless Gutters what needed to be done. Not sure if the machine would run again, Burch was instructed to do the bare minimum of repairs which excluded replacing the covers. The main concern for Burch and the NTM gutter technicians was to fix the wiring which had been burnt in the machine to prevent another fire or other major safety hazard.

Burch pointed out that the machine was on fire long enough to melt the guide bars and the paint also melted off of the covers but surprisingly little damage was done to the polyurethane drive rollers.  Also, the fire caused no signs of significant damage to the frame.

With just 5 hours of work at the Denver warehouse of NTM the burnt MACH II gutter machine, affectionately known as “crispy critter” by Burch, is functional and running gutter again.  New Tech Machinery is officially a hot commodity!

This architect will only use metal roofing for his projects

New profile from New Tech Machinery tops South Carolina school

 

BLUFFTON, N.C. (April 20, 2015) – Architects learn a lot in 40 years. That knowledge proves very beneficial to their clients. “We will not design a school without a metal roof,” says Jimmy Hite, AIA, NCARB, LEED AP, of Hite Associates in  Greenville, N.C. “We believe that a standing seam metal roof is the only real permanent solution for public school districts.”

A standing seam metal roof system, manufactured on site by Construction Metal Products of Statesville, N.C., and installed by Eastern Corporation of Youngsville, N.C., covers the New River Ridge Academy School in Bluffton, N.C. More than 177,000 square feet of Slate Gray metal roofing covers the school.

Mike Roux, sales manager at Construction Metal Products, says panel production started in-house in November 2014. “Some of the extremely long panels we ran at the job site,” he says. “Some were well over 70 feet long. We shipped some that long, but we decided to send the machine down there to run some panels.”

Construction Metal Panels has been running metal roofing panels for customers since 1994. This was one of the first projects to feature the SSQ275 New Lock Panel – a 2-inch high 17-1/2-inch wide panel. This new profile is able to meet the wind uplift requirements along the South Carolina coast because it is a snap-lock panel that can be mechanically seamed.

“It’s easy to install because it’s a snap-lock panel, installers like it,” Roux says. “Then you go back and seam it once. It’s not a double-lock, you don’t seam it twice, so that saves labor cost. It’s all about savings, savings, savings.”

 

Roux believes this profile will help set Construction Metal Products apart from its competition. Representatives from Construction Metal Products attend METALCON annually to find products and services that can set them apart from the competition. “There are so many sheep out there,” Roux says. “We’re looking for anything unique that will be beneficial to the end-user, beneficial to the installer and/or beneficial to the architect.”

 Meet the Winner of the Gutter Machine GiveAway!!

At the International Roofing Expo 2015 New Tech Machinery raffled off a FREE 6” MACH II gutter machine which had a retail value of $8,620!
The drawing was held at 1:30pm in booth #1301 on the second day of the show.  Entry into the giveaway was free and just required a business card or a filled out information slip. The only rule was that the winner needed to be present at the show. There were close to 200 entrants and they all crowded around New Tech Machinery’s booth, hoping to hear their name being called. Engineering Director, John DeBerard, acted as MC for the event while Sales Manager, Tom Laird, pulled the winner’s name. New York resident Frank Algier of Vanguard Roofing, who was visiting the show in New Orleans with his father, won the machine. Before winning the giveaway, Vanguard Roofing specialized in roof installation and repair but with the addition of the gutter machine they will also be offering gutter hanging services to their clients that they believe will earn them more business especially in their area which has experienced a lot of rough winter weather.

New Tech Machinery Joins the MCA

January 12, 2015

New Tech Machinery, manufacturer of high-quality portable roof panel and gutter equipment since 1991, is now an official member of the Metal Construction Association.  Joining at the very end of 2014, New Tech Machinery plans on participating with some of the councils and committees that the MCA offers.

The Metal Construction Association was formed in 1983 and has consistently created awareness of metal and promoted the use of it within the building industry.  Members include: manufacturers (like New Tech Machinery), suppliers, designers, installers, educators and building owners.  The MCA is also responsible for organizing the annual METALCON trade show which New Tech Machinery has exhibited at for years.

The Metal Construction Association continuously educates the public about the benefits of metal and that is something from which New Tech Machinery can benefit. New Year, New Panel

Section 179 Increased Limits- Officially Passed!

Official as of Wednesday December 17, 2014, the House and Senate both passed Section 179.  The actual bill that was passed is known as H.R. 5771 (the Tax Extenders Bill).  Now that it is official, Section 179 limits have been increased to $500,000.  While this could be a positive thing for many businesses, the new provision ONLY applies to the 2014 tax year so that means all equipment must be purchased an used before December 31, 2014.  2015 purchases will not apply.

Update on Section 179- December 15, 2014

No official word or vote for the possible increase of Section 179 as of yet.  We do know that H.R. 5771 the Tax Extenders Bill; was passed by the House on Dec 3, 2014.  This would make it possible to expand the Section 179 deduction limits from its current $25,000 up to $500,000.  The Senate plans to vote on this later this week.  The vote could go either way so only time will tell.  The increase, if it happens, will still only be good for equipment purchased and used in 2014.  Stay tuned for more details from New Tech Machinery.

So what is Section 179?

Section 179 of the IRS Tax Code allows a business to deduct, for the current tax year, the full purchase price of financed or leased equipment and off-the-shelf software that qualifies for the deduction. The equipment purchased, financed or leased must be within the specified dollar limits of Section 179, and the equipment must be placed into service in the same tax year that the deduction is being taken (for tax year 2014, this means the equipment must be put into service between 01/01/2014 and 12/31/2014).

  • Section 179 Deduction is available for most new and used capital equipment, and also includes certain software.
  • Bonus Depreciation can be taken on new equipment only (no used equipment, no software)
  • When applying these provisions, Section 179 is generally taken first, followed by Bonus Depreciation – unless the business has no taxable profit in the given tax year.
  • Also, many businesses are finding Section 179 Qualified Financing to be an attractive option in 2014

Pending Approval- Possible Section 179 increase for 2014!

The “Tax Increase Prevention Act of 2014”  includes  Section 179 tax breaks that allow businesses to expense up to $500,000 of new equipment purchases, including equipment leased and/or financed, in 2014.

The bill was passed by the House of Representatives, December 3rd, and placed on The Senate Legislative Calendar under General Orders, December 9th.  The Senate will be voting SOON and the bill is expected to pass. There is much to do before the President signs this bill into law, but you should be prepared to take advantage of these tax incentives, should they become available for 2014.

So what is Section 179?

Section 179 of the IRS Tax Code allows a business to deduct, for the current tax year, the full purchase price of financed or leased equipment and off-the-shelf software that qualifies for the deduction. The equipment purchased, financed or leased must be within the specified dollar limits of Section 179, and the equipment must be placed into service in the same tax year that the deduction is being taken (for tax year 2014, this means the equipment must be put into service between 01/01/2014 and 12/31/2014).

  • Section 179 Deduction is available for most new and used capital equipment, and also includes certain software.
  • Bonus Depreciation can be taken on new equipment only (no used equipment, no software)

How Our Specialty Tapered Slitter and Tapered Panel Machines Help to Finish That Unique Job

Many reports indicate that the popularity of metal roofing will continue to increase and New Tech Machinery will be ready to provide high quality portable rollforming equipment that will meet the needs of the consumer.  Thus, contractors will see an increased need to acquire equipment that is unique and user-friendly.

We have a two specialty machines (the TSM Tapered Slitter Machine and TPM Tapered Panel Machine.)  Both the TSM and TPM machines were designed with the end-user in mind and are easy to operate regardless of the complexity of the job they are being used for.  Metal Master Roofing reported that they spent just one day teaching the crew how to use the TSM and TPM machines and that was sufficient. Like all New Tech Machinery equipment, the TSM and TPM Machines are portable and therefore easy to transport to the jobsite.  Due to their small sizes, the TSM and TPM machines are also able to be shipped for a lower cost than large in-factory equipment.

These machines are ideally used in tandem for work on unique jobs that require tapered panels or non-traditional panel widths.  After panels are run from a New Tech Machinery roof panel machine, the tapered panel and tapered slitter machines can be used to achieve that perfect tapered point.  The TSM machine is used for slitting (up to 20 gauge coil) and produces fast, accurate cuts.  The TPM machine produces straight or tapered panels with double-male, double-female or standard female-males legs.

Contractors who have bought the TSM and TPM are surprised how much time the machines can save them on the jobsite.  Recently one of our customers, Metal Master Roofing and Construction had been contracted to replace a 16,000 square foot roof that had suffered severe hail damage.  The original roof was completed by another contractor that spent 8 months on the project, whereas a 5-man team from Metal Master Roofing and Construction was able to finish the job in 2 months.  The contractor attributed the shorter duration to having the right machines to get the job done.

In-Factory Vs. Portable Rollforming Equipment:
How to shop for, buy, finance and pick the best machine for you

The world of metal roofing is dominated by rollformers.  Metal rollforming machines incorporate a progression of forming rollers or tooling sets to form many different standing seam roofing profiles used in the metal roofing industry. They can utilize a variety of materials such as painted steel, painted aluminum, copper, and/or zinc in this process.

A dedicated consumer will discover the right fit of equipment by doing research and shopping around to compare rollforming machines.  A few key points to consider regarding rollforming machines are: quality, cost, panel profile production, warranty and service provided.  Quality is a very most important factor when choosing a rollformer as the machine will be an integral part of business.

When shopping for a machine, there are two specific and distinct types of rollforming machines: in-factory and portable.  It is important to keep in mind that two types of rollforming machines have many differences and vary greatly in features and cost.

Primarily, in-plant rollformers tend to be larger, faster machines utilized for high production rates. On-site rollformers, also known as portable rollformers, are smaller for easier transportation and tend to be more versatile in their ability to produce several different types of panel profiles.

Portable rollforming machines also have an impact on transportation costs as they save on packaging and initial freight costs while giving the contractor the ability to reduce lead-times compared to the hassle of ordering factory-formed panels.  Plus, on-site panel fabrication eliminates shipping damage to panels, sizing errors, short shipments and lost time due to any on-the-job changes.  Also, portable rollformers can produce any panel length required on-site as they are not constrained by shipping restrictions.

Since a rollformer is such a large investment, some contractors may need financing and there are many companies that specifically work with equipment financing.  Machine manufacturers can often refer clients to a reputable equipment financier.

As with any industry, rollforming is always evolving and introducing new technology.  Engineers are constantly working on new profiles and high-quality functioning parts that make the machines more user-friendly.  Portable rollforming machinery is much more advanced today—utilizing state-of-the-art technology that can consistently produce a high-quality panel that can compete with any in-factory roll-forming machine. Portable rollformers can deliver a precisely cut product more quickly and with little to no waste.

← What is that bar code?

Actually it’s called a QR Code and you may have noticed these bar code-like squares everywhere.  They can be printed on receipts, advertisements, websites, articles, books, magazines or anywhere that allows for printing.  QR code is short for quick response code.  Though they may seem like a brand new idea, car manufacturers have been using them since 1994 as a tracking system for their extensive parts list (that’s why they look like bar codes!)  They have only been used in mainstream material for the last few years, however.

QR codes are scanned with an application available on most Smart phones.   The QR code is made up of binary code and other technical patterns based on positioning, alignment and timing. The scanner reads the code and transports the user to the specific link on the internet.  This can be a webpage featuring a gutter machine, a video about roof panel machine care or an account.  Every code is specific and the link will always be the same.  The codes can also be different colors or sizes.

Troubleshooting for the Hydraulic Operated Shear and Drive Assemblies

February 18th, 2013

1. PROBLEM: Shear travels to the bottom of the stroke and does not return to the top of the
stroke. You can hear the hydraulic system laboring and pushing the Red
Shear Up Button does not return it to the top of stroke.

SOLUTION: Adjust the pressure switch (Figure 83) by turning the silver
knurled sleeve “A” counterclockwise until the shear goes up. Note: If you
turn the sleeve to far CCW, you will get problem #2 below on the next cut
made.

2. PROBLEM: Shear travels to the bottom of the stroke and returns to the top of the stroke
without cutting the panel completely through.

SOLUTION: Press and hold the Green Shear Down Button until the panel is cut
off. Remove the cut panel and jog material out 2 or 3 inches past the shear.
Adjust the pressure switch (Figure 83) by turning the silver knurled sleeve
“A” clockwise 1/8 of a turn. Press the Shear Down Button again. Check to
see if the panel is cut off completely. If not, repeat this procedure until the
cut is made with one stroke of the shear. Note: If you turn the knurled
sleeve too far CW you will experience problem #1 above.

General Machine Maintenance

Straight from the latest version of our MACH II manual (which comes with every gutter machine) here are some general maintenance tips for your gutter machine.  Proper machine maintenance will prolong the life of your machine!

GENERAL MAINTENANCE
1. Always keep covers on during operation and storage. The covers are for operator safety, but also protect the internal components of the machine from the environment.
2. Avoid storage of the machine outdoors for long periods of time. Cover the machine with a tarp or machine cover (optional) for protection. Provide good ventilation to prevent condensation and rust.
3. Keep the machine clean. This will increase the life of the machine and make maintenance easier. A clean machine will provide a clean product.
4. Before operating the machine, visually inspect for foreign objects debris or anything unusual. If something doesn’t seem correct, inspect and remedy prior to operation.
5. Keep chains properly tensioned. This will add to the life of the chains and sprockets. The chains should be just snug. An over-tightened chain is just as bad for the machine as a loose chain.
6. Lubricate the chains a minimum of every 40 hours of operation. It is preferable to use a dry motorcycle chain lube or equivalent.
7. Keep Entry Guide Carriage clean and lubricate as needed with Spray Lube.
8. Keep cradles lubricated with Clear Grease
9. Clean Forming Rollers as needed with a Scotch Brite Pad and a small amount of solvent.
10. Clean Drive Rollers with soap and water or mild solvent free spray cleaner.
CAUTION: Do not use harsh chemicals or solvents or damage will occur.
11. Lubricate both faces of the Shear Blades and Dies a minimum of once daily with Spray Lube.
More should be added as needed before the cut edges begin to deteriorate.

What is Section 179?

Section 179 is an IRS (Internal Revenue Service) United States tax code which
allows businesses to deduct the full purchase price of new or used machinery or
software within the tax year the purchase was made.  Leases and financed machines
qualify too.  It is part of the stimulus acts that have been passed.

When does Section 179 end?

Section 179 may or may not continue in 2013 and if it does, its benefits will be
significantly less.  To qualify for the current deductions purchases must be made
by December 31st, 2012.  When you go to file 2012 taxes, fill out IRS form 4562
and always use a qualified tax preparer.
